Teaching Practice:
Inspired by Egypt

INTRODUCTION

My name is Rosalyn Pollard. I am a National Board Certified Teacher in the area of Early Adolescence/Generalist. I teach at Stevenson Middle School in Westland, MI. Westland is located approximately 30 miles west of Detroit. Stevenson is one of four middle schools in the Wayne-Westland Community School District. Approximately 900 students attend Stevenson.

I am a teacher consultant working with sixth grade students. Currently there are sixteen students on my caseload. The majority of my students are certified with reading and written language disabilities. My students are fully included in World Studies, Math and Science. Some of my students receive general education instruction in language arts.

I am a member of a four-teacher team made up of three general education teachers and myself. I co-teach with the general education teachers. I am in the classrooms working with both general education and special education students. I also teach two self-contained classes to the majority of my students--language arts and study assist.

Stevenson has undergone a major renovation over the past two years. The school district has invested heavily in technology. Each classroom now has a minimum of four computers connected to the Internet. There is a large monitor display in every classroom. There are also three computer labs in the building. Two have the capacity to handle full-size classes. There are also class sets of laptop computers available to students in the science wing. There is also another class set of laptop computers available for classroom use.

I share my classroom with two other teacher consultants. Our room is a renovated shop. The size and design of the room allows us to design a learning environment to fit the various needs of our students. There is an area with a traditional setting and areas for group activities. There is a more structured setting for those students desiring or requiring it. We also have a reading center which is a hit with both students and staff. The environment we’ve created contributes to the “family feeling” of our learning community.
