Teaching Practice:
Colonial Times

INTRODUCTION

I am a fifth grade teacher at Garden City Elementary in Ft. Pierce, Florida. Garden City is a Title I school with over 550 students with more than 75% of our students on free and reduced-price lunch. I have 27 students and teach all core subject areas. I earned my National Board Certification as a Middle Childhood Generalist in 1999.

Ft. Pierce is a small urban city located 45 minutes north of West Palm Beach, Florida. Our county, St. Lucie, is one of the fastest growing counties in Florida. Our county has over 30 schools and over 22,000 students.

My classroom currently consists of 27 students, with 14 Caucasian, 10 African-American, and 3 Hispanic students. We have eight student computers (four Pentium-level & four 486-level machines), and one teacher computer running the Windows operating system. We also are equipped with a TV-to-computer link that allows the students to see on the television what is on the computer. Once a week we go to the computer lab. We also have the opportunity to use the computer lab whenever it is not being utilized by other classes.
