Teaching Practice:
Mingling at the Renaissance Ball

INTRODUCTION

I am a social studies teacher at Herndon High School in Herndon, Virginia. My National Board Certification is in Adolescence and Young Adulthood / Social Studies-History. This year I teach six classes-–two World History and Geography II, and four United States/Virginia History classes.

Although Herndon has a population of more than 2400 students, class sizes are comfortable with 23-26 students in each class. Classes are set up in 95-minute blocks that meet every other day. We focus on standards-based instruction guided by the Virginia Standards of Learning. One of our school goals is for students to be able to identify and explain the standard and essential knowledge associated with it to any visitor to their classroom.

Herndon High School is part of Fairfax County Public Schools, the 12th largest school district in the nation. Fairfax County and its schools are racially and ethnically diverse with students coming from all facets of society. 30% of our students speak a language other than English at home. Student enrollment is divided as follows: 59% white, 15% Asian, 11% African or African-American, and 12% Hispanic.

Herndon High School has been designated as a technology prototype school. Each classroom has a computer hooked up to a 36” monitor for use in presentation of curriculum materials. There are three PC platform computer labs for general education classes, which are always in use, and one teacher preparation lab. Each student and teacher has personal space on the school’s network. All school records including attendance, grades, and correspondence are done via the network.
