Teaching Practice:
Stop on Red, Yellow and Blue: Color in Art

INTRODUCTION

I am the art specialist at John F. Kennedy Elementary School in Somerville, Massachusetts. I earned my National Board Certification in Early Adolescence through Young Adult/Art in 1999.

My school has an urban setting, near Boston and Cambridge's many academic and cultural institutions. John F. Kennedy's student body is ethnically and economically diverse, and has three populations of special education students who are mainstreamed for specialists. These include students with multiple physical handicaps, students with emotional disturbances, and students with learning disabilities. Grades span from pre-kindergarten through grade eight. It is a public school with approximately 60% of the 500 students receiving subsidized lunch.

Teaching art in this context is exciting because of the variety of students’ creative art responses. The school is also an ideal training ground for future teachers, and I usually recruit interns from a nearby college. I design my own units of instruction and incorporate the content topics with art and technology standards. Because my school building is newly constructed, it has technology rooms I use with my classes. I have found that art combined with technology enhances my teaching practice.
