Teaching Practice:
"Fill 'Er Up!"--Discourse and Decisions in Mathematics

INTRODUCTION

My name is Carol Martin and I am a National Board Certified Teacher, certified in AYA/Math. I teach Geometry at Columbia High School in Lake City, Florida and I serve as the Mathematics Resource Teacher for Pre-K-12 for Columbia County Schools.

Lake City is a rural community in north Florida. It is known as the "Gateway To Florida" because of the network of major highways intersecting here. Our major industries are agriculture, mining and governmental services. Many of our young people cherish the country lifestyle, so they seek employment and careers that will allow them to remain in this area.

Columbia High School is one of two high schools in our county. CHS serves approximately 1800 students in grades 9-12 on a staggered, alternating block schedule. Students enrolled in six classes and attend three classes every other day for 103-minute blocks. They have opportunities to enroll in academic courses, Advanced Placement courses, dual enrollment courses at Lake City Community College, academies (environmental and graphics design), vocational programs and many elective courses.

My school emphasizes extracurricular activities including clubs, service organizations, and sports for boys and girls. The Leadership Class and Class Officers play a vital role in managing activities and providing social events for the student body.

My classes are Geometry Honors students in the 9th and 10th grade. Students are actively engaged in the learning process. New technology tools infused into lessons and activities help students develop an understanding of mathematics.
