Teaching Practice:
Plentiful Penguins

INTRODUCTION

I am a kindergarten teacher at the Assurant Satellite Learning Center in Miami, Florida. I earned National Board Certification in the Early Childhood/ Generalist Certificate area in 2000. The Miami-Dade Public School System staffs my school, but the building and the property are owned by the corporation where the parents of my students work. I have twenty students in my class: ten are of Hispanic descent, three are African-American, and seven are non-Hispanic White. Most of my students attended preschool at the corporation's private preschool and are well prepared socially and academically for kindergarten.

I have a large classroom with a rug area in the front and tables for four in the back. Each table is named for a color and shape; i.e., red square, green triangle, etc. This helps my students to learn shapes and colors. My classroom web site has a more detailed explanation of my classroom routines. I use pictures of my students in a pocket chart for classroom jobs.

The purpose of this lesson is to help kindergarten students learn about penguins as part of a larger unit on Antarctica. Through many activities, the students will listen, read and write about penguins and will publish their findings. They will make connections between the penguin families and their own families’ habits of caretaking.
