Teaching Practice:
The Name Game - Creating a Classroom Community

INTRODUCTION

I am a kindergarten teacher and literacy coach at Park Hill School of International Studies in Denver, Colorado. I earned my National Board Certification in the Early Childhood/Generalist Certificate Area in 2000.

Park Hill School is fifteen minutes from downtown Denver and is in one of the city’s oldest integrated neighborhoods. This is exemplified by the makeup of my kindergarten class with 45% Euro-American, 36% African-American, and 19% Hispanic-American children. The Denver Zoo and the Museum of Science and Industry are within walking distance of our school, providing wonderful educational resources. We have kept the international theme throughout the school. Each grade studies a different continent and ends the school year with an International Arts Festival.

I have lived here since 1966, and my two sons attended Park Hill. Living five blocks from my school provides an opportunity for me to enjoy the unique sense of living in a small community within a large urban setting.

I base my instruction in my kindergarten program on the teaching/learning cycle. I constantly observe my students and gather primary assessment data. I evaluate this data and make decisions to guide my planning, which results in focused teaching. I see myself as a lifelong learner who reflects on my teaching and takes on new challenges to improve my students’ learning. In the past few years, I have discovered that technology is a powerful tool to effectively engage my students in important learning tasks. I invite you into my classroom to see my discoveries in action.
