Teaching Practice:
Traveling to Mexico - a Technology Integration Lesson

INTRODUCTION

I am a sixth grade teacher at Central Elementary School, a public school in Jerome, Idaho. I earned National Board Certification in the Middle Childhood/Generalist Certificate area in 2000. I teach all core subjects except Music and Physical Education. I integrate technology into the curriculum whenever it would enhance student learning.

Jerome is in the south central part of Idaho. We have fewer than 9000 people in our town, and about 1200 students in the school system. Our main industries are agriculture and dairy farming. Although Jerome is a small rural community, the school district has received many technology grants, making it a leader in technology in Idaho.

I have a class of 29 students. Four of these students receive special education services and five students participate in the gifted and talented program. Ten of my students are Hispanic; the other 19 are non-Hispanic white. About half of the students have access to computers at home.

The purpose of this lesson is to develop a greater understanding of the people, history, landscape, landmarks, and way of life in Mexico by creating a travel brochure.
