Teaching Practice:
The National Math Trail

INTRODUCTION

The National Math Trail is an Internet-based project for K-12 teachers and students to discover and share the math that exists in their own environments. Students explore their communities and create one or more math problems that relate to what they find. Teachers submit the problems to the National Math Trail site, along with photos, drawings, sound recordings, videos--whatever can be adapted to the Internet. 

The National Math Trail is a wonderful opportunity to bring the excitement of real-world math into the classroom. It can be adapted to any mathematics topic of the K-12 curriculum. Creating submissions for the National Math Trail incorporates each of the essential 21st Century Skills: digital literacy, inventive thinking, effective communication, teamwork and the ability to create high quality products. 

There are many different ways to incorporate a math trail project in the classroom. Through interviews with teachers working on the project, examples, ideas and information, this exhibit will guide you through the process of doing a math trail project and creating a National Math Trail submission.

The National Math Trail is produced by the Foundation for Advancements in Science and Education. Support for the National Math Trail has been provided by the US Department of Education via the Satellite Education Resources Consortium (SERC), the NEC Foundation, the Verizon Foundation, and Texas Instruments.
